Today is World Health Day 2025 and it is fantastic that this year’s theme is ‘Healthy Beginnings and Hopeful Futures’. As Chair and Co-Founder of the charity Maternity Worldwide, we have worked tirelessly since 2002 to both advocate for improved maternal and newborn health in low-income countries, and to run projects to save lives in childbirth in 12 countries. We are currently working in rural Uganda and Malawi both at the village level (women’s empowerment, education and financial mobility) and health facility level (training, staffing and equipment) as an integrated approach to improve health of women and their babies. Saving Lives in Childbirth Maternity Worldwide is a charity which works in lowincome countries to help women and girls access the high quality maternal health care they need to be able to give birth safely. Having a baby should be a time of great joy and hope. But every year across the world 287000 women die in pregnancy and childbirth. Thats one mother dying every two minutes 800 each day.
