Today we remember VJ Day – 15th August 1945 On this day 80 years ago, the war in the Pacific came to an end and the world celebrated the final victory of the Second World War. Victory over Japan Day marked not only the end of six years of global conflict, but also the beginning of peace and the long journey of rebuilding lives and nations. At the Wings Aviation Museum, we hold multiple objects that speak directly to this history. One is a small Japanese sake cup that survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on 6th August 1945 — a fragile reminder of the human cost of war. Another is the remains of a Nakajima B5N2 Kate torpedo bomber — the same type of aircraft that took part in the attack on Pearl Harbor. Together, they remind us that history is made up of many stories, from all sides of the conflict. We remember and honour all who served — in the Armed Forces, the Merchant Navy, and on the Home Front — and the immense sacrifices made by all.
