Popis

MAMA Youth Project is a UK-based charity established in 2005 with the aim of equipping disadvantaged and marginalized young people aged 18 to 30 with the skills and experience necessary to secure long-term and fulfilling employment, particularly in the television and media industries. The organisation focuses on individuals from under-represented groups or those with limited educational or employment opportunities, including unemployed graduates[1][2][5].

History and Mission

Founded by Bob Clarke, a film and TV industry veteran, MAMA Youth Project was created to address the lack of diversity and representation in media professions. Clarke's personal journey—from growing up in North West London facing social challenges, to joining the army, and later working his way through the media sector—informed his commitment to providing young people from challenging backgrounds with access to industry opportunities[4]. Since its inception, the project has emphasized hands-on training and real-world experience by involving participants in MAMA Productions commissions and other broadcast and digital media projects.

Activities

MAMA Youth Project recruits, trains, and nurtures young adults between 18 and 30 years of age, focusing primarily on those from Black, Asian, and minority ethnic (BAME) backgrounds and other marginalized communities. Training programs include practical experience in various aspects of media production, aiming to equip participants with skills that will help them secure employment in a competitive and traditionally exclusive industry[1][2][5].

The organisation delivers its training programs at the Sky Osterley Campus and is committed to increasing diversity within media professions by preparing young people for careers in television and digital media[5].

Financial Information

For the financial year ending 31 December 2023, MAMA Youth Project reported a total income of approximately £871,691, primarily derived from donations, legacies, and charitable activities. Its total expenditure for the year was about £773,339, with the majority directed towards charitable activities[2].

Impact

With nearly two decades of operation, MAMA Youth Project has become recognized as a significant force in breaking down barriers to employment in the media industry for young people facing social and educational challenges. It offers a practical pathway to employment and seeks to foster increased diversity and inclusion in a sector historically difficult to access for marginalized groups[4].
