🇬🇧 August 2025 marks 80 years since VJ Day, the surrender of Japan and the true end of the Second World War. For many, the war did not end with Germany’s surrender. Thousands endured brutal conditions in Japanese POW camps. Our collection includes poignant correspondence relating to Arthur Anderson, a Japanese prisoner of war. Arthur was a Chief Petty Officer in HMS Encounter at the Battle of the Java Sea. HMS Encounter was a destroyer escorting HMS Exeter which had already been damaged in earlier action along with USS Pope. After HMS Encounter was sunk, he was rescued the following day by the IJN destroyer, Ikazuchi. The survivors had been adrift for some 20 hours, many coated in oil.
