Founded in 2008 in response to the devastating Cyclone Nargis, which affected the Irrawaddy Delta region of Myanmar, the organization focuses on improving the quality of life for villagers in this region through integrated programs in education, health, and livelihoods.
Founding and History
HTBD was established following Cyclone Nargis, which caused over 140,000 deaths and extensive damage to villages in the Irrawaddy Delta. The charity was inspired by the personal experiences of its co-founders, May Tha-Hla and Jon Wilkinson, who witnessed the refusal of the Myanmar government to accept foreign aid at the time. May Tha-Hla, leveraging her connections to Myanmar, took significant personal risks to deliver aid directly to affected areas, leading to the formal establishment of the charity due to public support and the overwhelming need for assistance.
May Tha-Hla's connection to Myanmar is deeply personal; her father, Dr. Tha Hla, was born in a small village within the Delta region and rose to become Rector of Yangon University through the support of his community and educators.
Mission and Activities
HTBD operates with a collaborative approach, working closely with local villagers and authorities to identify needs and implement projects effectively. The organization respects the strong community spirit and democratic decision-making processes of the Delta villagers, who seek self-sufficiency and participate actively in planning and executing projects.
The charity's mission is underpinned by the ability of May Tha-Hla to communicate directly in both English and local languages, ensuring clear understanding and effective support.
HTBD's integrated approach supports the development of education, health, and livelihood opportunities to foster sustainable improvements in the lives of villagers in the Irrawaddy Delta.

We work collaboratively using an integrated model focusing on education health and livelihoods to help improve villagers quality of life in the Irrawaddy Delta Region. Our work Our objective is to provide support to help build capacity improve lives and reduce poverty. We focus on the three areas where the communities have greatest need.
