CAMDEN MUSIC TRUST

Camden Music Trust is a UK-registered charity (Charity number 1126046) dedicated to supporting and promoting music education for children and young people in the London Borough of Camden. Its primary mission is to ensure that all children in Camden, including those from financially challenged backgrounds, have the opportunity to participate in and benefit from music tuition and engagement.

Mission and Objectives

The charity's objectives focus on advancing education in the arts within Camden for the public benefit. Specifically, Camden Music Trust aims to:

  • Provide funding for music education programs and scholarships for talented children facing financial hardship or other social difficulties.
  • Offer bursaries that cover the costs of music lessons for children living below the poverty line.
  • Support inclusive musical events for children, including those with Special Educational Needs (SEN).
  • Supply musical instruments on loan to children and young people from less advantaged backgrounds.
  • Facilitate access to music tuition that fosters personal development skills such as resilience, team building, self-discipline, confidence, and creativity.

Activities and Programmes

Camden Music Trust's funding enables a broad range of music education initiatives delivered through the Camden Music Service, which works with all Camden primary and secondary schools. Key activities include:

  • Providing over 25,000 hours of instrumental tuition annually to more than 5,000 Camden school children.
  • Supporting 34 four-year scholarships tailored for highly talented children facing challenging circumstances, with plans for expansion.
  • Running 40 holiday and weekend music groups, as well as Saturday music centres.
  • Operating 35 youth ensembles, including jazz groups, orchestras, and choirs.
  • Organizing the biennial Camden Music Festival at the Royal Albert Hall, involving over 1,800 pupils to showcase their musical achievements.
  • Facilitating musical events that promote diversity, inclusion, and accessibility, particularly for children with SEN.

Impact and Community Role

In Camden, nearly 32% of children live below the poverty line, making access to private music tuition difficult for many families. Camden Music Trust plays a vital role in mitigating this disparity by making music education affordable and accessible. Through its support, children not only develop musical skills but also gain broader benefits such as improved academic performance, social skills, confidence, and emotional wellbeing.

Governance and Funding

The charity is governed by a board of nine trustees, none of whom receive remuneration. Its financial activities for the year ending March 31, 2023, included total income of £105,482 and expenditures of £91,641. Camden Music Trust relies on donations and grants from trusts, foundations, and individual donors to sustain and expand its programs.

Notable supporters and funders include The Aldama Foundation, Julius Baer, The Foyle Foundation, Jusaca Charitable Trust, The Loder Family Charitable Trust, The Marchus Trust, Phoenix Works, St James’ Place Charity, and The Vintners’ Foundation.

Collaborations

Camden Music Trust works closely with the Camden Music Service, which employs over 150 music tutors and coordinates the delivery of tuition and events. Together, they uphold a vision of diversity and inclusivity, ensuring that musical education opportunities reach all children regardless of their socio-economic background.
