Under the expert direction of Stefan Hofkes the orchestra has built up an excellent reputation performing in Bristols main concert venues with top national and international soloists attracting critical acclaim. The Orchestra is the longest established orchestra in Bristol being able to trace its routes back to the 1940s. In the early days it was known as Bristol Light Concert Orchestra but renamed without the Light by the early 1950s in order to better reflect the symphonic nature of the works played by the orchestra by that time.
