🙌 Works have started on the final tanks in our two year programme to bring much needed water to remote schools in Uganda. By the end of July, we will have built 107 eco-block rainwater roof harvesting tanks in 22 schools supporting over 10,000 pupils and staff! These tanks generate a range of powerful outcomes far beyond clean water: 💥 Improved health: attendance rates have increased at schools with our tanks, due to reduced sickness levels through a reduction in water borne diseases. 💥 Education: without tanks pupils miss lessons to collect water and poor sanitation leads to girls dropping out of school. Schools with our tanks show a substantial increase in girls’ attendance and school enrolment. 💥 Hunger: our tanks are enabling many schools to provide pupil meals for the first time and for cabbages, maize & bananas to be grown in school gardens. 💥Climate action: water from our tanks is being used to grow tree seedlings to plant in school gardens and distributed to parents & communities to enhance village micro-climates. 💧 There are more schools in the Masaka region that are in need of clean water. We are excited to announce we will be launching a new rainwater roof harvesting programme supporting additional schools this Autumn. #Uganda #waterharvest #SDG6 #SDG2 #SDG4 #SDG1 #SDG3 #SDG13 #rainwaterharvesting #water #WaterSanitationandHygiene #climatechange #innovation (fb)
🤩 Dugout success in Sinsina, Ghana! We are so happy to share the news that following our renovation works, the dugout in Sinsina which is usually dry this time of year, is full of water! 👉🏼 In remote regions of Ghana year round steams are rare & ground water is often inaccessible, so communities collect rainwater in dugouts but these are now drying out for several months at a time due to climate change. This means villagers, especially women & young girls have to walk very long distances to find often un-safe water, disrupting their education and work. 💧 We are helping to resolve this problem by working with our local partner Saha Global to expand & rehabilitate dugouts to ensure villagers have a sustainable source of clean drinking water. 💥 The renovation works at Sinsina took place over several months last year, resulting in a deeper dugout three times its original size. Vertiva grass and trees were also planted around the dugout to reduce evaporation during the dry season. 🩵 It is wonderful to see how clean drinking water is bringing joy to children in Sinsina during a time when they would usually be struggling with water access.
