🎺 What a season finale! 🎺 Both the temperature and the standard of music were high this evening as our season closed to rapturous applause. We opened with the dramatic "Fate Now Conquers" by the American Composer Carlos Simon (who hasn't even turned 40 yet!). It's packed full of intense passages, albeit brief, which took our audience by surprise. Our principal trumpet, Richard Wood, delivered a flawless interpretation of the technically challenging concerto by Gregson. And to bring the curtain down on our musical year, the orchestra almost danced their way through Beethoven's 7th Symphony, surely one of the most iconic works in the orchestral repertoire. Our thanks, as ever, go to everyone who works so hard to make our orchestra work: our receptive audience, our volunteers, our generous sponsors and our benevolent patron. And of course, to our musical director, the entrepreneurial Shaun Matthew: whose programming is innovative and whose passion for excellence means that our little seaside town produces music worthy of a city concert hall. ’Twas the night before the concert, and all through the hall, Not a violin whispered, nor timpani call. The music was waiting in silence and grace, As dreams of crescendo danced into place. The bows were all rosined, the bassoons held tight, Each stand lit and ready, a magical sight. Beethoven’s bold spirit stirred in the air, While Simon’s rich colors hung gently with care. A trumpet concerto would soon steal the show, With flourishes shining and brilliant bravado. The maestro stood poised with baton in hand, To summon the storm from his talented band. So Scarborough sleeps while the music prepares, A night full of rhythm, of passion and flares. Come dawn, let the echoes of harmony rise A concert of wonder beneath seaside skies.
