The Parochial Church Council of the Ecclesiastical Parish of St John-at-Hampstead (Charity number: 1129264) is the governing body responsible for the administration and pastoral care of St John-at-Hampstead, a Church of England parish church located in Hampstead, London.
History and Background
The origins of the parish church trace back to the early 14th century, with the earliest clear references to a church on the site dating to 1312 when John de Neuport served as priest. The original chapel was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary by 1333. Over the centuries, control and patronage of the church transitioned through significant historical changes, including the dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII, after which the Benedictine foundation of Westminster was replaced by the Bishopric of Westminster[2].
The current church building, designed by Henry Filcroft, was constructed in 1747. The church gained prominence as Hampstead developed into a popular area known for its clean air and springs, attracting residents and visitors alike, which necessitated the expansion and maintenance of the church facilities[1][2].
In 1917, the church's dedication was refined to St John the Evangelist from simply St John, under the authority of the Bishop of London[3].
Governance and Activities
The Parochial Church Council (PCC) serves as the body managing the church’s affairs, finances, and community outreach. Under the Parochial Church Councils (Powers) Measure 1956, the PCC has the authority to levy a voluntary rate on local businesses and residents to support church activities and maintenance. Since 1986, the St John-at-Hampstead PCC has regularly levied such a voluntary rate, initially to supplement funds for a millennium redecoration appeal, which has become an ongoing annual financial support mechanism[3].
Community Role
The PCC plays a crucial role in sustaining the spiritual life and heritage of the parish church, which serves an active congregation in the Hampstead area. The church building itself holds a significant place in the local history and heritage of Hampstead, contributing both religious services and community engagement.
This summary encapsulates the role and history of The Parochial Church Council of the Ecclesiastical Parish of St John-at-Hampstead, highlighting its charitable status, historical origins, and governance within the Church of England framework.

We give thanks for the life and witness of Bishop Sarah, our diocesan Bishop, who has prayerfully responded to God‘s call on her life to the See of Canterbury. We hold Bishop Sarah and her family in our prayers as she prepares for this new ministry. A prayer for the new Archbishop of Canterbury Almighty and everlasting God, the only worker of great marvels, send down upon your servant Sarah, called to be Archbishop of Canterbury, and all who are committed to her care, the spirit of your saving grace, and that they may truly please you, pour upon them the continual due of your blessing, grant this, O Lord, for the honour of our advocate and mediator, Jesus Christ. Amen (fb)
