The Parochial Church Council of the Ecclesiastical Parish of Finchley

Overview

The Parochial Church Council (PCC) of the Ecclesiastical Parish of Finchley, registered as Charity Number 1131595, is an organisation that oversees the management of St Mary-at-Finchley Church, a historic parish church located in Finchley, London.

History of St Mary-at-Finchley Church

The church has a long history dating back to at least the 12th century, with records mentioning it in 1274. By 1356, the church was dedicated to St Mary. The oldest parts of the building, including the north wall and the tower, date from the reign of King Henry VII[1][3]. Over the centuries, the church has undergone several alterations and restorations. Notably, in 1872, the church was enlarged, and in 1878, a new organ was installed by Henry Willis & Sons[1].

Key Historical Events

  • Chantries and Expansion: A chapel in the north aisle was built in 1334 as a chantry chapel by the Lord of the Manor, indicating the church's role in medieval religious practices[2].
  • Restoration and Rebuilding: Following damage during the London Blitz in 1940, the church underwent significant rebuilding and restoration work completed in 1953. This included replacing stained glass and constructing a new altar, reredos, and pulpit[1].
  • Organ Restoration: The church organ, which had been relocated to the west end after the bombing, underwent major restoration work that was completed in 2011[1].

Charity and Ecclesiastical Activities

As a nonprofit organisation, the PCC manages various aspects of church life, including community services, fundraising, and maintenance of the historic building. The church plays a vital role in the local community, hosting events and facilitating activities for different age groups and interests[3].

Heritage and Commemorations

In 2000, a special wall hanging was created to commemorate the new millennium. This piece of art represents the diverse groups involved in the life of St Mary-at-Finchley, symbolizing community cohesion and religious continuity[1]. The church itself is a Grade II* listed building since 1949, reflecting its historical significance[1].
