We are so excited to announce that we will be hosting the Dorset Songs of Stone Portland Poets Festival! •On Saturday, June 7th 2-3pm, as part of our museum open day, there will be SHARED READINGS of a selection of poems from the Portland Poets, Skylark Durston, Bob Woollage, George Davey, and Boy Male, read by museum volunteers and members of the local community. This will also be the launch for our COMPETITION to write a poem or nature writing inspired by the Portland Poets about your favourite places on Portland. (Please note we will share a leaflet of prompts to help get inspired by Skylark and the poets and to help people shape their own nature writing.) • On Saturday, July 26th, Portland Poets’ FESTIVAL with guest community readers, 2-4pm With new sharings of nature writing and poetry in response to the challenge, and original work by the Portland Poets, with kind permission from their families. We are inviting the community to Portland Museum on Saturday, June 7th, for our open day! From 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Come in and meet some of our team and see what a day in the life of Portland Museum is like! Interested in volunteering at the museum? This is the perfect opportunity to come and say hello and learn more about our roles. Since 1930, Portland Musuem has been run by the community. The people of Portland were given the museum as a testament to the Island’s rich history, and the local community has kept its doors open to the public ever since! We will also have ‘Dorset Songs of Stone’. From 1pm – 2pm, there will be Quarry and Stone Conversations at the museum in the stone room/ garden, Discussion Cafes to share memories and stories of Portland quarries and stone workers and life on the island in lived experience. And to end the day, we are hosting SHARED READINGS of Portland Poets in the garden from 2-3pm. All are welcome! and FREE hot drinks served throughout the day. (fb)
