Facebook In the aftermath of crisis events, social media is often avalanched with information—and more often than not, a “false flag” claim emerges, asserting that an incident was staged, coordinated or politically timed. While false flag conspiracy theories long predate the internet, the speed and scale at which they now spread is unprecedented. These baseless claims reject official sources and claim that violent attacks are staged or orchestrated by hidden actors to advance political agendas. Their reach is further amplified by influencers who increasingly act as primary sources, benefiting algorithms that reward sensationalism over accuracy. We analyzed this trend earlier this year and found that time and time again, in moments of crisis, these narratives distort facts, promote fear and frame global events through a conspiratorial lens—further deteriorating trust in institutions.
