Happy World Jellyfish Day! 🪼 Did you know that the waters around the UK are home to some truly mesmerising jellyfish species? From the moon jellyfish, easily recognised by its four petal-shaped rings, to the lion’s mane jellyfish, whose tentacles can reach up to 3 metres long, our coasts are full of these graceful drifters! Jellyfish have been around for over 500 million years, making them older than dinosaurs. They don’t have brains, hearts, or bones, instead they have a network of nerves that can detect temperature, touch and smells. In UK waters, you might also spot the compass jellyfish, with its beautiful brown “compass” markings, or the barrel jellyfish, often seen in late spring and summer, growing up to 1 metre across! Despite their alien look, jellyfish are important for our ecosystems, providing food for turtles, fish, and even seabirds. As well as playing a key role in nutrient cycling.
