How are butterflies doing so far this year? 2024 was a disastrous year for butterflies, with long spells of wet weather. Sadly, we therefore don’t expect 2025 to be great, because fewer butterflies flying in the previous year means opportunities to mate and lay eggs were reduced, and there sadly won’t be many caterpillars turning into butterflies this year. But our conservation officers Ruth and Vince have been carrying out surveys as part of the UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme at Lark Rise in Cambridgeshire and our Herefordshire Farms – and they have seen some encouraging signs. Our Pierrepont Farm volunteers have created a brilliant dead hedge! Using leftover cuttings from the hedge laying earlier this year, they've created a fantastic wildlife habitat. Dead hedges might look quiet but they’re buzzing with life! They provide shelter, nesting spots, and food for all sorts of creatures, playing a vital role in the British countryside.
