In the UK, Black women are twice as likely to experience stillbirth than white women and Black babies are over 50% more likely to die shortly after birth. This isn’t about biology, it’s about inequality. From being dismissed when they speak up, to receiving inadequate care. Black women are more likely to have their concerns ignored or downplayed. Black women are more likely to face delays in diagnosis, less thorough monitoring, and slower access to urgent care, all of which increase the risk of stillbirth. Clinical guidelines are often based on data that underrepresents Black women. When research doesn’t reflect the realities of Black pregnancies, they can’t receive the most appropriate care. There’s no greater pain than losing a baby. When that loss stems from systemic failures, and could have been avoided if you were born a different colour, it is completely unacceptable.
