Our latest Herne Bay Historical Records Society local history talk takes place on Thursday 4th September. This month we are very pleased to welcome Karen Emery to Pettman House to present her talk entitled ‘Cricket, Gunpowder and Graves : Pathways to Public Landscapes in Swale’ If you have ever wondered how some of the parks, green spaces, and community areas that we all enjoy in our local area have come to exist as they are today, Karen’s talk promises to give a fascinating insight into some of the stories and history behind this. Using recent research by the Kent Gardens Trust into many of these sites, including parks, cemeteries, a former gunpowder works and a medieval moated site, Karen’s talk reveals the fascinating history that links the provision of these green spaces to the social and economic history of the region. If you would like to join us for this talk at Pettman House, Wimereaux Square, the doors open at 6.30 and the talk itself will begin at 7.00 p.m. All are welcome, entry is free for members and just £3 for visitors. #buyinthebayhb Buy in the Bay (fb)
Tomorrow is the last opportunity join us for the Herne Bay history trail as part of the Herne Bay festival. We will be at Pettman House, off Wimereux Square, between 10.30 and 12.30 tomorrow morning, Thursday 14th August. Look for our advertising boards and volunteers outside, ignore the scaffolding and come inside! Pick up your free history trail booklet full of information and old photographs of the sites around the town. Take yourself on a self guided tour, following the map provided and immerse yourself in the history of Herne Bay old town. For our young explorers, you have your own map and quiz sheet looking for clues and answering questions along the route. You don’t need to know about history, the answers are all there in plain sight for you to search for… can you find them all? There will also be some displays at Pettman House to look at to give you more information about the history of the town. No booking is necessary and it is completely free for everyone to join in, just come down and enjoy the day exploring. For more information, visit our website hbhrs.org, or message us through Facebook or through the website info@hbrs.org Herne Bay Festival The Seaside Museum, Herne Bay Buy in the Bay (fb)
