💧 “We have improved as a village and as a community.” — Faith, Langat village resident. Last year, we worked alongside Faith and her neighbours in Langat, Bomet County, to transform a muddy, unreliable spring into a clean, sustainable source of water for the whole community. What was once a bog is now a lifeline—protecting health, saving time, and restoring dignity. As Faith shared with us: “Before the project, we could sometimes collect muddy water or dirt from the jerrycans would remain in the hole, and it was not healthy. We could have outbreaks of stomach aches among residents. But now, we don’t get such cases anymore. In terms of health, it is better.” Safe water changes everything—from health to livelihoods. At Dig Deep, we understand that it’s local people who will overcome the water and sanitation crisis and that our role is to help them speed this up. This is why we’re so proud to have this year expanded our sanitation & hygiene promotion programme to provide ongoing training and support to 390 Community Health promoters within Bomet County. For context, every village in Kenya has a Community Health Promoter who is employed part-time by the government to promote community health through a mixture of community events and household visits. Working together at a grassroots level, these health promoters form the backbone of the Kenyan health system. To support this vital work, we're this year providing training and support to 390 Community Health Promoters, empowering them to educate their neighbours about the benefits of improving sanitation & hygiene and promoting affordable toilet improvement technologies. The reason we have chosen to work with the promoters in this way is that it helps build on their public health expertise and this work can be carried out in the course of their normal activities, strengthening the existing health system within the county. As a direct result of this support, these incredible Community Health Promoters have already empowered 86,000 people to ensure every household in their village has a toilet and place to wash their hands. This matters because diarrhoea is still the second leading cause of childhood mortality in Kenya and we know that gaining access to a safe toilet and handwashing facilities can reduce the chances of children getting diarrhoea by half.
