UK law must enable all survivors of trafficking and modern slavery to access rights and justice, irrespective of their immigration status. The Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill would do the opposite. The bill would block asylum and human rights claims for nationals of countries considered “safe”. This includes countries such as Albania, India and Bangladesh, which are countries of origin for many survivors of trafficking and modern slavery, with Albania ranking in the top 3 nationalities most referred to the National Referral Mechanism (NRM) last year. Survivors of trafficking need safety and protection, not suspicion and punishment. The government must build a system that defends, not denies, their rights.
