We're back after a short summer break with Tomorrow's Warrior's +1 at Foyles Charing Cross Road with Oscar Jerome Oscar Jerome joining our Junior Band this coming Friday! Jerome composed and featured on Kokoroko’s breakthrough single ‘Abusey Junction’ and has gone on to perform with Shabaka Hutchings, Moses Boyd, Yussef Dayes & Lianne La Havas. Following the release of his debut solo album 'Breathe Deep', he toured the UK with Kamasi Washington. Gig details and tickets here: (fb)
A big look back in pictures at our celebration of the Harlem Renaissance last Saturday at the Southbank Centre The evening concert began with Nu Civilisation Orchestra telling the story of dancer, singer and activist Florence Mills as they performed the premier of The Blackbird of Harlem, featuring vocals from Cherise, dancers led and choreographed by Valerie Ebuwa and narration by Doña Croll. The second part of the concert was a high-octane dive into the stunning compositions of Duke Ellington, with Black, Brown and Beige and A Tone Parallel To Harlem filling the auditorium of the Queen Elizabeth Hall. Earlier in the day we hosted a very special panel discussion, moderated by journalist Kevin Le Gendre who was joined by Margaret Busby, Bonnie Greer and Soweto Kinch, as they explored the origins and impact of the Harlem Renaissance - a 100-year cultural revolution, the impact of which can still be felt to this day. Thank you to everyone who came out and supported.
