This caption hit us deep.... "She had a scar but she still let me near. I knew she was a "she" because the park ranger told me so... They come by with their drones to check up on these beauties. This was taken around 2 a.m. She was big, maybe 10 metres long and completely calm. But as she swam past, I saw a deep cut near her back. Most likely from a boat strike going too fast. Even with that injury, she stayed gentle and didn’t swim away. She let me be with her for almost two hours. The trust she has over humans .. sigh .. We did this to her . Our species.. That really hit me. Whale sharks are harmless. They don’t bother anyone. But injuries like this happen way too often and it’s mostly because boats don’t slow down. So if you’re out there, especially at night, please slow down. Keep a lookout. These animals deserve better".
