Lichfield Gospel Choir
Lichfield Gospel Choir is a vibrant and joyful UK-based gospel choir, renowned for its inclusive community spirit and diverse repertoire that embraces African, gospel, and soulful music. Established in 2010, the choir comprises over 100 members who participate regardless of musical ability, learning all their music aurally to foster a welcoming and accessible environment.
History and Formation
The choir originated from a series of workshops conducted by the Birmingham-based acapella quintet Black Voices during the 2009 Lichfield Festival. The success of these workshops led to the formation of a permanent choir, which has since grown steadily and become a key cultural presence locally.
Leadership
Since its inception, the choir has been led by music director Themba Mvula, whose inspirational leadership has been critical in the choir's development and resilience. Gabriella Liandu joined as associate music director in 2020, enhancing the choir’s musical direction. Themba Mvula’s dedication was notably recognized during the COVID-19 pandemic when the choir transitioned to online rehearsals, allowing it to thrive despite lockdown challenges. His efforts earned him shortlisting for the Making Music award, as well as a joint nomination with the choir for a Royal Philharmonic Society award in 2021.
Activities and Ethos
Lichfield Gospel Choir emphasizes creating an inclusive space where every member can participate equally and contribute to the choir’s joyful performances. Their repertoire spans a wide range of styles, from Nigerian lullabies to contemporary songs, reflecting their evolving musical journey and commitment to diversity. The choir also adapts to changing circumstances creatively, having embraced virtual rehearsals and performances during the pandemic, and hybrid rehearsals combining in-person and online participation.
