A conversation with our Trustee, Raymond Lopinski What does it mean to engineer for humanity? In support of #WorldHumanitarianDay, our Trustee Raymond Lopinski explores how technical expertise can drive social impact - and why success starts with putting people first. "I believe all technical, all professional work shapes lives, so should inherently be humanitarian. Whether designing infrastructure, buildings or financial systems, success and value are defined by how it improves lives. To me, 'humanitarian' means that your decisions are driven by the impact on people and communities leading to increased value and positive systemic change." With over 20 years planning corporate expansions across 20+ countries, Raymond brings a unique perspective on how human-centric design creates lasting value - both for communities and businesses. "In my work, I've seen how community-oriented design leads to more successful, sustainable and economical outcomes. AzuKo exemplifies this by proving that the 'right' solution - one co-created with communities - is often more meaningful, impactful and cost effective than conventional approaches." Access to a toilet isn't just a basic human right - it's a lifesaver that unlocks human potential Right now, 46% of Bangladesh's population don't have access to a clean, safe toilet of their own. The consequences are devastating: - Children under 5 dying from preventable diseases - Girls missing school during menstruation - Women feeling unsafe at night - Entire communities trapped in cycles of poverty and illness But, when families get access to safe, dignified sanitation: - Disease transmission drops dramatically - Children stay healthier and attend school regularly - Women and girls gain dignity, safety and freedom - Communities break free from poverty cycles And then the doors start opening. At AzuKo, we've seen how access to proper sanitation transforms lives. Students can focus on their education, young people can pursue their dreams, and families can invest their time and energy in building stronger futures, rather than managing daily crises. When people have dignity in something as fundamental as sanitation, they can pursue education, build careers and create better lives for their families. Everyone deserves the chance to chase their dreams, not spend their lives chasing basic human rights. (fb)
