Yesterday (Tuesday 13th May) Trump announced plans to remove US sanctions on Syria. This is a significant moment. With 90% of the population living in poverty, lifting sanctions is an essential step, without which Syria and its people simply cannot begin to rebuild. Essential services, from electricity to medical care, education and water as well as humanitarian aid delivery, have been hampered by the sweeping sanctions established initially against the Assad regime by the EU, US and UK amongst others. People were celebrating across Syria last night in the hope that this shift will foster greater economic recovery and stability. Today the US president met Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa, in a further show of normalizing relations between the two countries. We hope that this move gives Syrian communities and civil society the space they need to rebuild, flourish and hold their government to account, in a more just and tolerant nation. (fb)
