Friends of Serenity

Friends of Serenity is a UK nonprofit organisation (Charity number: 1157866) dedicated to supporting the health of pregnant women and families who have experienced miscarriage, stillbirth, or neonatal death. The charity operates primarily in East Lancashire and partners with East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, particularly supporting the Lancashire Women's and Newborn Centre.

Founding and Purpose

The organisation was founded by Jo Edwards, who established Friends of Serenity following the loss of her own son, Luke, in 2013. The charity aims to preserve and protect the health of sick pregnant women and provide support to families during such challenging times.

Projects and Activities

Friends of Serenity implements several initiatives to achieve its objectives:

  • Mama Academy Wellbeing Wallets: Over the past two years, they have funded approximately 7,500 of these wallets for families in East Lancashire. The MAMA Academy, set up in 2012, focuses on reducing stillbirth rates in the UK, which are among the highest in the developed world. Normally costing families £2, these wallets are provided free of charge thanks to the charity's funding.
  • Rainbow Boxes: The charity creates and distributes these boxes to families who have a "Rainbow Baby," a child born after a previous miscarriage, stillbirth, or neonatal death. Each Rainbow Box is handcrafted and costs between £45 and £50 to create.
  • Fundraising Campaigns: Friends of Serenity organizes fundraising campaigns, such as the "Reach for Rainbows" campaign, to support these projects.

Impact and Anniversary

As of 2023, Friends of Serenity marks its 10-year anniversary since its founding. Through its efforts, it has made a significant impact on families in East Lancashire by providing support during complicated pregnancies and after baby loss, promoting awareness and reducing the stigma associated with such experiences.

Our Aspirations VIEW ALL Tree of Life Appeal DoTheTreePose challenge This year we are commemorating 10 years since our founder Jo Edwards set up Friends of Serenity following the loss of her own son Luke in 2013. We knew we had to do something special to commemorate the occasion and behind the scenes this year we have been working to get a special project Reach for Rainbows Our Rainbow boxes cost us between 4550 to create with each item carefully selected and wrapped by hand. In 2021 we want to Reach for Rainbows and weve created a fundraising campaign to help us do that. If you would like to donate to the campaign or run a fundraiser for this project just click Mama Academy Wallets For the past two years Friends of Serenity have funded 7500 Mama Academy Wellbeing Wallets for families in East Lancashire.
