💙💙💙 Polys Update - Adopting An Older Cat 💙💙💙 When you adopt an older cat with YCR we want to give you the reassurance of support with vet bills for any old age conditions that may arise. In this case Polys was adopted out with his form but he was or at least it seemed he was fit and well. As you can see from the update below he unfortunately became ill after a few months. We were in contact with the new owners and the vets at all times so that Polys could get the treatment and a diagnosis that was needed. We know that older cats may have issues after adoption and this is why we always support our adopters. I wanted to give you an update on little Polys after his traumatic weekend last week and thank you for the support. Thank-you so much for your understanding in agreeing to pay for his treatment, it means a lot, and I know the vet was in contact with you a few times. Polys has unfortunately been diagnosed with advanced HCM - hypertrophic cardiomyothopy - a condition I do know a little bit about as it's more common in British Shorthairs, especially males. He's now on diuretics to try to keep the water off his heart, and also blood thinners to avoid clots, which can also happen with HCM. But he's gradually got back to being more himself over the last few days. The vet said that the heart condition could have been underlying for some time, but wouldn't have been known without heart scans or any other symptoms. They said it's not unusual that it's came on so quickly, as it can have just got to the point where it can't cope anymore, so we're relieved we noticed his breathing and behaviour change. But although he's home and doing well, the reality is it's not good news for his life expectancy. We have to monitor and measure his breathing very closely, and the vet wants to check him again next week. We're devastated that he's not a healthy as he seemed (running around like a kitten only days before this happened!), but equally we know that's the luck of the draw with an elderly cat, and we'll him give loads of loads of love and care for as long as we have with him.
