Popular weatherman Derek Brockway picked his visit to National Coastwatch Institution - Porthcawl as one of his most memorable adventures during his BBC series ‘Weatherman Walking’. In the latest series being shown on BBC2 and iPlayer, Derek revisited some of his favourite walks in Wales. He called in to the station to find out about the particular challenges for the station with its panoramic views across the bay and Bristol Channel which has the second largest tidal range in the world. And of course Derek also tried his hand at reading out the local weather forecast on the VHF radio, closely supervised by Judith, one of the highly trained watchkeepers. Across all our 61 stations, our highly trained watchkeepers work closely with our search and rescue partners as well as with the local community, helping to help save lives along the coast. Working closely usually means contact by VHF radio and phone but putting faces to names and meeting up in person is always a welcome opportunity. Nine NCI Boscastle volunteers were fortunate to enjoy a tour of HM Coastguard's Maritime Rescue and Coordination Centre (MRCC) at Falmouth, one of 10 centres around the UK, in addition to the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Hampshire. Peter, NCI Boscastle's Deputy Station Manager was one of them. He said: "We'd like to thank all the team at the Falmouth MRCC, it was great to put faces to the many voices we're familiar with by phone and radio. "It was a fascinating tour and we had a really informative and enjoyable discussion about how we can provide the local knowledge to assist with reports of search and rescue incidents," he said. #EyesAlongTheCoast (fb)
