November’s remembrance is a powerful time across the UK, filled with tributes, ceremonies, and moments of reflection. Yet, for many veterans, Remembrance and Armistice Day can also be a period when mental health challenges come sharply to the fore. Public commemorations, along with fireworks and loud events, often echo memories of conflict, bringing back the sounds and intensity of gunfire and explosions. For those living with PTSD and other mental health conditions, these triggers are very real, and the grief of losing comrades is never far beneath the surface. We at Veterans With Dogs see the weight that remembrance can carry for our veterans and their families. Our assistance dogs stand by their side, helping to ease anxiety, ground emotions, and make these moments less overwhelming. Through our PALS programme, veterans gain the skills and companionship they need to participate in commemorations in a way that feels safe and supportive. We’re absolutely delighted to introduce RED, our newest Hero pup in training! RED has just arrived and is settling in beautifully with his socialiser family, ready to embark on his journey toward becoming a life-changing assistance dog for one of our veterans. RED’s first days have been full of excitement, snuggles, and getting to know his new routine.
