Young Women's Music Project
The Young Women's Music Project (YWMP) is a UK-based educational charity dedicated to providing an inclusive and supportive environment for young women, trans, and non-binary people aged 14 to 21 to engage with music creatively. Registered under charity number 1161028, YWMP operates primarily out of Oxford and focuses on empowering participants through music-making, skill development, and self-expression.
Mission and Objectives
YWMP aims to create a wholly inclusive space where young people can freely express themselves through music. The organization fosters a non-judgmental atmosphere that encourages creativity, experimentation, and personal growth. It emphasizes feminism in action by building a community—a "sisterhood of creatives"—that supports young women and gender-diverse individuals in developing confidence and artistic skills.
Activities and Programs
YWMP offers twice-monthly free workshops and music sessions where participants collaborate to create and record music, plan and perform gigs and events, and engage in discussions about issues relevant to young people. These activities are designed not only to develop musical skills but also to provide opportunities for social connection and advocacy in a safe and welcoming environment.
The organization also hosts weekly hangouts, occasional festivals, and one-off courses to encourage ongoing engagement and creative exploration.
Impact
By providing a safe, inclusive, and supportive setting, YWMP allows young women and gender-diverse youth to try new things, make mistakes without judgment, and express themselves fully. The project is recognized for its contribution to community welfare by promoting mental well-being, self-confidence, and empowerment through the arts.
YWMP represents a unique model of using music education as a vehicle for social change, inclusion, and creative empowerment among marginalized young populations in the UK.

We’re proud to be screening our film, What Left After The Wave Hits?, as part of Marmalade Festival 2025. Marmalade is a place where local and global people meet to challenge, celebrate and learn about social change. Our film tells the story of our director, Zahra Haji Fath Ali Tehrani, and her 20 year journey with YWMP. Watch the film on Wednesday 2 April, 4 - 5pm, at the Phoenix Picturehouse, and join Zahra and the safer spaces steering committee as they discuss the making of the film, and the issues at large in Oxford - no safe spaces for young people to create music, attend shows, or perform. Then learn about how YWMP are changing this, both for Oxford, and beyond, with their Safer Spaces policy. Book your free ticket in bio! (fb)
