Aber Valley Heritage Group

Overview

The Aber Valley Heritage Group is a UK nonprofit organization, registered with the charity number 1161759. Formed in 2008 by a group of local volunteers, the group's primary mission is to preserve the mining heritage of the Aber Valley, particularly focusing on the history surrounding the Universal Colliery in Senghenydd[3].

Purpose

The organization aims to raise capital and highlight the rich heritage of the coal industry in the area. Key efforts include developing and maintaining a Memorial Garden and a Heritage Museum, both located in Senghenydd[2][3]. These facilities serve as educational and commemorative spaces, honoring the lives lost in tragic mining disasters at the Universal Colliery, which occurred in 1901 and 1913[3].

Activities

  • Heritage Preservation: The group works to maintain a high standard of both the Aber Valley Heritage Museum and the National Mining Memorial and Garden, ensuring these spaces remain accessible for visitors.
  • Educational Initiatives: Volunteers organize the showing of historical films, provide talks, and accommodate group visits, particularly from local school pupils interested in learning about their valley's history[3].
  • Fundraising: The organization relies on donations to support its activities and maintain its facilities. These donations are crucial for the continued operation of the museum and memorial garden[1].

Operational Structure

The Aber Valley Heritage Group operates with a committee consisting of 15 volunteers holding roles such as Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer. They meet monthly to oversee and coordinate activities[3]. The museum offers free admission and is open between 11 am and 2 pm daily, except for Sundays and bank holidays[3].

Location

The group is based in Caerphilly and focuses its activities in this region, preserving local mining history[4].
