The Beth Chatto Education Trust is a UK-based nonprofit organisation dedicated to promoting education, inspiration, and enjoyment through plants and gardens. Established in 2015, the Trust focuses on environmental education that integrates horticulture, ecology, sustainability, wildlife, and conservation principles[1][2].
Mission and Activities
The Trust aims to inspire learning by translating the gardening ethos of Beth Chatto, a renowned plantswoman, into educational activities based on ecological principles such as habitat, habitat selection, adaptation, and interrelationships between plants and animals. These themes are taught through engaging and tailored activities designed to meet specific class learning outcomes[1].
The Trust offers a variety of programs including:
- Courses, workshops, and events in horticulture, ecology, sustainability, wildlife, and conservation.
- School visits and Forest Schools to provide hands-on environmental education.
- Garden activity programs for children and families.
- Community initiatives that promote outdoor learning and wellbeing.
- Partnerships and collaborations with educational and environmental organisations.
- Awarding grant support to students pursuing related studies.
- Training in RHS qualifications, garden design, photography, and art[2].
Governance and Operations
The Trust operates under charity number 1162486 and is managed by a board of four trustees supported by eight volunteers. It employs staff but does not disclose any employees with total benefits exceeding £60,000. Some trustees receive payments or benefits for services provided to the charity[2].
Financial Information
For the financial year ending 31 December 2023, the Beth Chatto Education Trust reported a total income of £85,612 and total expenditure of £124,220. The charity does not have any trading subsidiaries and fundraising details are not publicly available[2].
Connection to Beth Chatto Gardens
The Trust is closely linked to Beth Chatto Gardens, a 7.5-acre site near Colchester, Essex, created by Beth Chatto OBE, which showcases the ecological gardening philosophy of "right plant, right place." The educational activities of the Trust are often conducted within or related to these gardens, providing a real-world ecological learning environment[1][5].
The Beth Chatto Education Trust continues to foster ecological awareness and environmental education through its diverse programs, inspiring people of all ages to appreciate and engage with the natural world through gardens and outdoor learning.

This week with garden manager Malin It feels like autumn has arrived in earnest - colder mornings and colours changing in the garden - it’s one of my favourite times of year! We’ve been joined by diploma student Harry from Kew Gardens this week and with an extra pair of hands we’ve been able to get lots of work done. We started the week in the Gravel Garden, weeding and tidying up leaves and acorns that are starting to fall, then moved on to planting the bulbs that arrived last week. Swathes of Tulipa sylvestris were planted in the woodland, Narcissus recurvus var. poeticus was added to the Grassy Walk, and Tulipa turkestanica and Iris reticulata was planted in the Scree Garden. Planting bulbs is hard work, but so worth the effort when we get the rewarding flowers in spring next year. The end of the week was spent in the Scree Garden, weeding beds and paths, and last but not least moving Beth’s succulent collection from its summer display into the greenhouse where it will be stored away from the frost all winter. Cathy made the team an ident of 30 seedlings from the Gravel Garden. It's important for us to know which plant is what from a very tiny pair of leaves so we know whether its friend or foe and if we want to weed it out or not. How many can you guess? It's intern Sybille’s last week. She’s been with us since April and has been a wonderful addition to the team. Sybille we will miss you loads, come back and see us soon! (fb)
🌱This week in propagation Emily and Harry (visiting from Kew) have been indulging in a seed extravaganza. In the picture, both are working on Armeria pungens, a relative of our native sea thrift (A. maritima), but this hails from the coast of Spain, Portugal and some Mediterranean islands. Needing a warm well-drained spot, but has now survived outside with us, for the last three years, in our gravel garden. Our asters and symphotrichums are all coming into flower! I headed down to our stockbeds, which is where Debs takes her cuttings from to produce these beautiful plants. One of Beth's favourite asters was A. pyrenaeus 'Lutetia'. These sport a loose mound of interlaced branching stems smothered to the ground with pale lilac-blue flowers, with finely-rayed petals 5cm across. Lasts for weeks in the garden, perfect to soften the outline of mixed autumn arrangements. Plus they stay mildew free, hurrah! I headed over to the propagtion house to check out the eucomis cuttings. It's such a great plant to propagate, unusual some might say, and like all things worth doing, they take time, but the reward is splendid. I'll make sure to uodate you when those bulblets are formed! We've been working heavily in our multi-span polytunnel of late, preparing it for the influx of plants which will be coming inside as the colder, damper season rolls in. 'There's not much work over the winter' does not apply in our nursery setting. These plants need to be cut back and prepared to overwinter in the tunnels, where they wait to shoot again. These are the plants which make up our stock and sale plants in the spring when of course, most new cuttings and seedlings are still a way off from being ready. One of the cuttings completed this week was Phlox caespitosa 'Zigeunerblut', a low spreading perennial with narrow foliage and startling pink-red flowers. For the rock garden, pots or front of the border. It's very sweet and one worth looking out for. As another week heads towards its close, the nursery is looking lush and we hope to see many of you visiting this weekend. Until next time! Rob (fb)
