We are incredibly grateful that Sue chose to share her powerful story for our Radio 4 Appeal. Sue’s journey is one that starts like many women in prison — using drugs to escape the pain of childhood trauma. After turning to dealing heroin to fund her addiction, she was sentenced to four years in prison. But for Sue, prison became a turning point. She describes it as a blessing, a time to break free from the chaos of her former life and begin again. Through yoga and meditation, Sue found the strength to transform her life. "I’d done meditation in the past, and I knew I didn’t want to be addicted to drugs in prison, so I put myself through cold turkey before I went away and once inside, I reconnected to my meditation practice." Sue has been clean for over 30 years, went on to become a drugs counsellor, and now volunteers in her community. She credits The Prison Phoenix Trust for being there for her unconditionally, offering support throughout her healing journey.
