THE BAR CHORAL SOCIETY is a United Kingdom-based nonprofit choral organisation founded in 2014. Uniquely connected to the legal profession, it brings together barristers, judges, solicitors, pupils, trainees, legal professionals, and their families to perform choral music to a high standard. History and Membership

The Bar Choral Society was established to offer individuals within or associated with the legal community the opportunity to sing in a high-quality choir without the requirement of auditions. Members are drawn from across the legal system, including judges, barristers, pupils, solicitors, trainees, students, and those working in Chambers and the Inns of Court, as well as their families. This inclusive approach acknowledges the demanding schedules of its members, often accommodating work and family commitments by not requiring a minimum number of rehearsals to be attended.

Activities and Performances

The choir typically performs approximately two concerts annually, featuring professional soloists and orchestras. Its repertoire spans a wide range of choral music, from Renaissance composers like Gabrieli and Byrd to 20th-century composers such as Bernstein and Gershwin. Special concerts have included collaborations with other choirs, such as a joint performance with The Parliament Choir at St John’s, Smith Square to commemorate Ralph Vaughan Williams’ 150th anniversary.

Concerts take place primarily at venues within the Temple area, including the historic Temple Church, with rehearsals regularly held on Monday evenings. Notably, for its 10th anniversary in 2024, the Society planned a celebratory concert featuring works by Parry, Haydn, Finzi, and Purcell, as well as the world premiere of a commissioned piece by composer Cecilia McDowall.

Leadership and Patronage

The Bar Choral Society is led musically by its Music Director, Greg Morris, who guides the choir through its diverse and challenging repertoire. The Society holds the distinguished choral composer John Rutter CBE as its President, underscoring its commitment to musical excellence.
