We would like to share with you a Mentoring story to coincide with MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK 12TH – 18TH May and “The power of community” 19-year-old BK was referred to our service in October last year by his grandad/carer. BK faced many challenges in his life around self-harm, anxiety, depression, low-level self-esteem and social isolation. He was a very introverted young man with only ‘online friends’. We matched him with Mari, who has been providing him with weekly, one-to-one therapeutic mentoring support, to understand the barriers facing him and work together on strategies to overcome these. With the weekly one-to-one social and emotional listening/ therapeutic support, BK’s mental health, self-esteem has improved. He is less socially isolated and now has the confidence to reengage in his local community and meet new friends outside of home. With BK being able to build trust in another adult, outside his family circle, and talk to Mari about his worries and future aspirations, he has built his confidence, can look to his future more positively, and be less anxious about building a move forward.
