Frome Symphony

Frome Symphony is an ambitious amateur orchestra based in Somerset, United Kingdom, established in 2001 as a charitable music society. It operates under the management of volunteer trustees and is registered as a charity (Charity number 1167989). The organization is dedicated to promoting high-quality live classical music within the local community and providing educational and developmental opportunities for musicians of all ages[1][4][3].

Aims and Activities

Frome Symphony undertakes four to five projects annually, focusing on a diverse range of musical activities including:

  • Symphony and concerto performances, often staged at local venues such as the Cheese and Grain in Frome.
  • Educational courses led by guest musicians and professional tutors, enabling participants to learn and perform large-scale orchestral works.
  • Collaborations with choirs and other music societies to perform choral compositions.
  • Community concerts aimed specifically at younger audiences to engage and inspire the next generation of classical music enthusiasts[1][4].

Leadership

Mark Gateshill has served as the Director of Music and conductor of Frome Symphony since 2009. He studied music at the University of Exeter and pursued conducting studies with Jonathan James and later Peter Stark at the Royal College of Music. Gateshill has professional experience with ensembles such as the Bath Philharmonia and the Bristol Classical Players, and he has conducted concerts across Europe. In addition to his role with Frome Symphony, he is Head of Strings at Bristol Cathedral Choir School, where he teaches violin and viola and directs the String Orchestra[4].

Community Engagement

Frome Symphony maintains a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere, encouraging applications from new members who wish to join the orchestra. It plays an active role in the Frome Festival and other community events, contributing to the cultural life of the region through its performances and educational initiatives[2].

Financials

For the financial year ending August 31, 2023, Frome Symphony reported a total income of £12,835, reflecting its status as a community-focused charitable organization promoting musical education and public performance[3].

This summary encapsulates Frome Symphony’s role as a vital contributor to Somerset’s cultural and educational music landscape, fostering both community participation and musical excellence.
