The Society for Music Analysis
The Society for Music Analysis (SMA) is a UK-based international organisation dedicated to the advancement of music theory and analysis. Founded in 1992 by Jonathan Dunsby, the SMA has become a leading body in fostering communication and engagement with various aspects of music theory, including formal and critical theory, aesthetics, semiotics, music psychology, cognitive science, and music technology.
Mission and Activities
The SMA's mission is to promote music theory and analysis in the broadest sense, welcoming interests in all musical repertoires and cultures. To achieve this, the society organises a regular programme of events, including the annual Theory and Analysis Graduate Students (TAGS) Conference, the Music Analysis Summer School, and other Music Analysis Conferences (‘MACs’) and symposia. These events are designed to facilitate scholarly exchange and collaboration among music theorists and analysts.
Affiliations and Network
The SMA is closely affiliated with the academic journal Music Analysis, which has been publishing since 1982. Additionally, the SMA is a member of the European Theory & Analysis of Music (EuroT&AM) Network, further strengthening its international presence and collaboration.
Awards and Funding
The SMA issues various awards, such as the Pascall Medal and the Adele Katz Early Career Research Award, to support and recognize excellence in music theory and analysis. The society also provides funding in the form of bursaries and prizes to support research and participation in its events.
Current Leadership
As of recent times, the SMA is led by a President who oversees the society's strategic direction and initiatives. The current president is Christopher Tarrant, who is also a Senior Lecturer in Music Analysis at Newcastle University.

Society for Music Analysis Welcome to the Society for Music Analysis The Society for Music Analysis SMA is a UKbased international organisation dedicated to music theory and analysis. We are affiliated with the journal Music Analysis and support and organise a regular programme of events including the annual Theory and Analysis Graduate Students TAGS Conference the Music Analysis Summer School a residential course taught by international experts and other Music Analysis Conferences MACs and symposia.
