Overview
The Medway Open Award Centre (MOAC) is a nonprofit organisation and a registered charity in the UK, with the charity number 1172240. Established as a Directly Licensed Centre, it provides cost-effective access for young people to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award (DofE) programme.
Purpose
MOAC serves the Medway area, supporting young individuals aged 14 to 24 in completing the Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards of the DofE.
Organisation
The centre is led by an experienced expedition practitioner with a background in managing DofE expeditions for both local authorities and the Army Cadet Force (ACF). The volunteers at MOAC have extensive experience and possess qualifications such as Mountain Leader (ML) and Wilderness First Aid (WGL), many having been involved with the DofE for over 25 years.
Operations
MOAC operates from a dedicated centre located at the Stand Leisure Park in Gillingham, providing services to Gillingham, Rochester, Chatham, and outlying areas like Strood, Rainham, Walderslade, and Lordswood. It offers an on-site equipment store where participants can borrow necessary kit for their expeditions, including tents, rucksacks, and cooking equipment like trangias.
Activities and Support
MOAC organises expeditions for all levels of the DofE, offering practice and assessed expeditions at various locations. The programme includes training, equipment hire, and campsite fees, ensuring that participants have a comprehensive experience.
Volunteer Opportunities
The centre provides opportunities for volunteers to support the provision of the DofE in Medway. All volunteers are subject to a DBS Check to ensure a safe environment for young participants.
