The very best thing you can do for hedgehogs is to be aware of where they might make their nests and be sensitive with what you do in your garden. We are approaching hoglet season and every year Suffolk prickles has calls about uncovered nests. If you uncover a nest please re-cover it as soon as possible and place it back as you found it. Try not to make drastic changes in your garden. Try to change it over time. Also try not to bring in machinery to make garden changes as machinery can kill or maim hedgehogs without a lot of care, Female hedgehogs create nests in the most discreet safest part of the garden where they can bring up their young, Their first consideration in choosing a nesting place is safety, after this it is proximity to food and water. A mother to be will collect leaves, grasses, and moss to make her nest which she will weave into a tight ball like structure, this often looks like a pile of leaves when uncovered. Suffolk Prickles has had calls about hedgehogs that have created nests in flower pots surrounded by tall grasses, bramble and hedging, under a bushes, under sheds and decking. She always chooses where she feels safest. An expectant mother needs to make a nest which is dry, shady, warm and safe. In town gardens, often hedgehogs do not have enough natural materials to make a good nest so they end up nesting under barbecues, tarpaulins, in sheds, in old settees, in porches and garages, As we approach hoglet season please be aware of how you garden and try to check where you are making changes thoroughly before using mechanical tools.
