Harpenden Summer Carnival –CANCELLED (POTENTIAL TO POSTPONE) Please, see the message from the Council: It is with much regret that we have had to take the decision to cancel the Harpenden Summer Carnival due to take place tomorrow. We hope to postpone the event and will be in touch with details on that next week. We have been closely monitoring the weather this week, including the wind speeds, heavy rain, and thunderstorms, and have been working hard to deliver the Carnival safely. We have made modification throughout the week in order for the event to continue but unfortunately the lightning and thunder that is now predicted during set up, event times and take down is too high of a risk. From first thing this morning there has been a yellow weather warning in place. Analysing the maps from the Met Office throughout the day, it had looked like we would miss the very worst of the weather which was the thunder and lightning storms. However the 3pm and 4pm updates from the weather providers is suggesting that there will be up to five occasions throughout the day when we will see a storm over Harpenden. Any thunder/lightning storm during the event would require an immediate evacuation of site and the closing down of structures, many of them metal. The safety of residents, traders and event staff is always at the forefront of our decisions even though we appreciate how disappointing this is to everyone. Please bear with us as we inform all those due to participate in the event and we will be in touch next week regarding the possibility of rearranging the event to another date in the near future.
