We are delighted to be able to publish photos of the newly machined extension frames for 3840. These are only the fourth new set of extension frames manufactured since the end of steam. The first set was forged by Heskeths of Halifax for 2999 Lady of Legend and the two later ones, for 3850 and 6880 Betton Grange, were machined from solid billets 100mm thick as were ours. Working closely with the Great Western Society at Didcot No. 3840 is to be built to the pattern of the 10 original Counties erected at Swindon in 191112 featuring Holcroft curved frames and screw reverse. The locomotive will incorporate both original GWR and new components such as the Standard No. 4 boiler currently carried by unrestored 280T No.
