There renewed rise of India's tiger population is a great reason to celebrate today's 🐯INTERNATIONL DAY OF THE TIGER 🐯! Recent estimates show that India is once again home to more than 3100 tigers - over 70% of the world's population. In the majority of the other 12 range states, e.g., in Southeast Asia, their numbers continue to fade. The reasons for this are habitat loss and poaching for the illegal wildlife trade. India's tigers are protected in 53 reserves, which collectively cover more than 75000 square kilometres and individually can generate economic benefits of up to US$265 million per year. Put differently, for every rupee spent on the management of 10 reserves, the reserves provided benefits ranging from Rupees 347 to Rupees 7,488 inside and outside the reserves. Our founder, Dr Barbara Maas, attended the first-ever global Buddhist conference! 🥳 Dr Maas lead the environment segment of the summit as the Secretary for Environment and Conservation of the International Buddhist Confederation. She argued that the Buddhist community can have a major impact on the preservation and protection of nature. In an interview with The Times of India, she explained, 'We as Buddhists can show global leadership in healing our broken relationship with nature and living in harmony.' A pioneering programme to reduce wildlife trade demand in key Asian countries is doing just that. 💚 The Global Buddhist Summit, held on April 20th and 21st, united Buddhist practitioners from across the globe to discuss pressing worldwide crises. Notable figures of the Buddhist community and environmental experts, including the Dalai Lama himself, participated.
