We are catching up with Matt Denham @mattdenham_ one of our Creatively Connected artists. 💚 Matt is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores shared experiences of our physical, virtual and emotional environments in a changing world. Using video, sound, digital media and textiles, he creates thoughtful, often surreal installations developed in close collaboration with communities and practitioners beyond the arts. As part of Creatively Connected, Matt has spent the last six months exploring Teesdale in search of blueprints for nature. His project considers how climate change, land management practices and rural policy shape the landscape - and asks what futures we might design if our environments were built with the needs of nature in mind. Starting with the Teesdale Assemblage (a rare combination of alpine-arctic and southern European plant species unique to the area) Matt has drawn on this idea of 'assemblage' as a wider metaphor for the landscape: a layered mix of habitats, histories, land use, and care. His encounters with farmers, land managers, conservationists and volunteers have revealed rich stories and perspectives which will shape his final creative work and help amplify the aims of the wider Tees Swale. Ecological Blueprints continues over the summer through a series of site visits and gatherings, building towards a publication and exhibition this autumn. Creatively Connected is a one-year arts project that Northern Heartlands has been commissioned to produce. It’s supported by Arts Council England and The National Lottery Heritage Fund as part of Tees-Swale: Naturally Connected.
