For International Day of Older Persons on 1 October, we’re highlighting the often overlooked area of dementia rehabilitation for increasing quality of life. Dementia is now the most common cause of death in Australia, and Alzheimer’s disease accounts for around 60–80 per cent of all cases. Alzheimer’s Disease International has just released their World Alzheimer Report 2025, focusing on why rehabilitation in dementia care matters, and how tailored and goal-oriented approaches can help maintain function and independence. The report also states that at least one in three people globally will need rehabilitation for a health condition at some point in their lives. Last week we had the privilege of welcoming a delegate of Taiwanese palliative and dementia care specialists to HammondCare! We loved welcoming our visitors to our sites at St Leonards and Miranda where we showcased Australia’s approach to dementia and palliative care, and shared how HammondCare’s unique, person-centred model is making a real impact. A special thank you to Dr. Tsuann Kuo, who first led a student delegation to HammondCare in 2019 and now returns in a distinguished new role. Appointed by Taiwan’s Ministry of Health and Welfare, Dr. Kuo led this high-level delegation focused on dementia innovation - continuing to strengthen international collaboration in aged care.
