The Bear Hotel was the centre of Newtown's social life for over two hundred years. Built in 1768 as a coaching inn it hosted many formal and informal gatherings in its life time. In 1904 Mr Harry Edgar Breeze, who was also proprietor of the Elephant and Castle, bought the hotel. This Tariff card dates from between then and 1919 when he sold it on to Captain Holmes. Spare a thought for 35 year old dressmaker Mary Ann Goodwin of Llanllwchaearn who, on 16 October 1834, gave birth to her son Pryce Jones. His name would become well known across the world. Yet, when 'Burke's Peerage' published his details following his knighthood in 1887, only his father's name was included. Opening for 2025 season on 24 April We are working hard to get the museum ready for opening at the end of April this year and we are looking forward to seeing you. If you want to find out about us in the meantime there is plenty to discover here on our website. Check out our new walkthrough tour in English or Welsh and watch the whole process of weaving on our new videos. We are always keen to welcome new volunteers even when we are closed so if you want to be involved check out how to help.
