The race for mineral resources is tightening its grip on South Africa's oldest game reserve. The Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve is now nearly encircled by prospecting and mining applications targeting coal and other minerals. Over a dozen companies have applied for mining rights along the park’s boundaries, threatening the integrity of the protected area and the wellbeing of surrounding communities. If approved, mining operations could bring daily dynamite blasts, pollution, and forced relocations to people living near the park’s edges.
