🦁 Human–wildlife coexistence is at the heart of everything we do at Lion Landscapes. Conservation isn’t about keeping people out—it’s about working alongside them, recognising their knowledge, and supporting them in coexisting with lions and other large carnivores. Last week, our team joined Mukutan Conservancy for training with herders, livestock supervisors, and rangers. From hands-on sessions on livestock husbandry to carnivore ecology, the conversations were rooted in lived experience, shared around bomas and beneath the stars. It was clear that with practical knowledge, herders can take steps to reduce conflict and strengthen coexistence. We're grateful to Mukutan Conservancy for walking this path with us. We echo the sentiment that “...conservation doesn’t mean excluding people — it means including them, equipping them, and walking alongside them.” (fb)
Ndundunyikanza village, in the Selous-Nyerere landscape, currently has no active Lion Extension Officer (LEO) presence. Yet many young people from the Barabaig pastoral community — the majority group in the area — remain well-informed about our work through LEO dance performances and conservation activities in neighbouring villages. Despite the absence of a local LEO, the community continues to show strong interest in conservation and has engaged positively with our team. Elders in particular shared their appreciation for the awareness raised about the importance of lions, large carnivores, and other wildlife. We recently helped organise a LEO dance event in the village, bringing together women, men, elders, and youth through traditional songs and dances alongside conservation messages shared by Lion Landscapes staff. The event also welcomed Sukuma dancers, whose participation helped to foster unity and cultural exchange between the Barabaig and Sukuma communities as they celebrated together. These events are part of our approach to supporting coexistence, encouraging dialogue, cultural connection, and shared understanding around wildlife conservation. #LionLandscapes #ConservationInAction #CommunityEducation #LEOsDancing (fb)

Our mission is to make large carnivore conservation valuable to local and global communities. Our Approach Lion Landscapes believes in creating a world where large carnivores are an asset to the local people who live alongside them. When the value of wildlife right up to these top predators can be unlocked and realised both people and nature will benefit. We believe that positive value is developed through three interrelated areas of action.
