Hackney Youth Orchestras Trust

Hackney Youth Orchestras Trust offers instrumental, orchestral & group tuition at our Saturday Music School @stokeyschool. If you are aged 5 to 21, play an instrument or sing and live in Hackney or an adjacent borough, come and join our Saturday Music School. Sessions take place on Saturdays during term time and at the end of each term we present a public concert. Hackney Youth Orchestras Trust is a music school for children and young people living or studying in Hackney and neighbouring boroughs. The School's progressive concessions policy makes it accessible to groups currently under-represented in music education. Students are taught by professional musicians both individually and in groups, leading to regular free public concert performances.

Hackney Youth Orchestras Trust

Hackney Youth Orchestras Trust is a UK-based registered charity dedicated to providing music tuition to children and young people primarily residing or studying in the London Borough of Hackney and surrounding areas. Established in 1992, the trust has operated a vibrant and welcoming Saturday Music School for over three decades, fostering musical skills alongside personal and social development.

History and Mission

Founded to nurture musical talent and appreciation among youth, Hackney Youth Orchestras Trust (HYOT) initially operated as an unincorporated trust before transitioning to a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) status. The organisation's current charity registration number is 1191159, having changed from its previous number 1013051.

HYOT’s mission centers on a holistic approach to music education. This philosophy integrates individual and group tuition in both practical instrument training and theoretical music studies. The trust emphasizes the role of music not only in developing strong musicianship but also in enhancing social and personal growth for participants. HYOT believes in maintaining accessibility and openness to all young people who share the organisation’s values, aiming to make a positive impact through music[1][2][3][4].

Activities

The core activity of the trust is its Saturday Music School, which provides weekly sessions during school terms. These sessions combine ensemble playing, orchestral experience, and music theory education, nurturing a comprehensive musical environment. This structure supports progression from beginners to more advanced levels, allowing young musicians to build confidence and collaborative skills.

Governance and Community Engagement

Governed by a board of trustees, Hackney Youth Orchestras Trust operates with a commitment to community involvement and volunteer leadership. The trust has recently sought new leadership for its Chair of Trustees role to continue its legacy and adapt to future challenges.

Additionally, HYOT has maintained a strong partnership with local educational institutions and cultural organisations, including long-term support from London Metropolitan University, which has contributed trustees and other resources to the trust’s development[1][2][5].

Significance

Hackney Youth Orchestras Trust plays a significant role in the cultural and artistic life of young people in Hackney and nearby boroughs. By providing access to quality music education regardless of background, the trust fosters inclusion, creativity, and personal empowerment through the arts.
