Monday 21st July, 2025 We admitted two hoglets one after the other this evening, Sam is from a farm outside St Just, she was picked up near to where her sibling was found dead and kept under a pen OUTSIDE on her own for 3 days with food and water. Thankfully the person's son found out she was there and thought she should come into a rescue. He saw her Mum in the distance but very sadly she ran away. The second hoglet was left in a box (with some cucumber!) on the doorstep of a lady in Newlyn who has in the past fostered a hedgehog. Broken record alert : Please, please, please, if you see a hedgehog or a hoglet OUT IN THE DAY it does need picking up, (the only exception to this is a Mum walking with purpose, moving nests or gathering nesting material) then you need to pop in a box, then you need to provide a source of warmth, (so he can move away from source of warmth if he needs to) , then and very importantly, you need to ring a rescue for advice! Even if you don't know who that is just Google FIND A HEDGEHOG RESCUE and the first website is the British Hedgehog Preservation Society, ring their number 01584 890801 and they will tell you your local rescues. Now ring them immediately, don't attempt to care for the animal yourself because they are complex mammals and it is actually an offence to do so because they are a threatened species. Rescues are trained, hopefully they keep up to date with current research, they use incubators, do internal parasites checks, have suitable accommodation, have access to vets and meds and are hopefully experts on hedgehogs. Please also don't stick it in a box in front of someone's door who looked after one once. Broken record alert over. Poorly Flora received more therapeutic treatments on her legs and feet and she spent a while in the ICU, I could see her walking tall which shows that she has some pain so she has been given pain relief. I gave her supportive feeding this morning but I was thrilled this afternoon when she walked into the feeding pod and had some semi moist food and then had a good drink. Remarkably both hoglets are 190 and 191 grams respectively and they are cuddled up together now following an initial "smell share." Sam had recently laid myiasis (fly eggs) on her back and in her ears so these were swiftly removed. Guess who went home this morning?! Holly and Sean came over and collected Gorgeous George!! His spines have all grown back although he does get dry skin still. I rang Bresser UK and the non-technical term is that it is goosed, and the even worse news is that the warranty has run out (I bought it 5 years ago) so tonight I need to do my research and order a new one. I have no option, it is one of the most vital pieces of equipment that we use, even though it will eat into our funds. If you are in a position to help us with this piece of equipment we would, ofcourse, be very grateful because this is a large unplanned expense at this time.
