Austria makes a great move for coexistence with bears with their decision to scare away and radio-collar a bear in the Landeck district, instead of shooting the 'problem' bear. The Tyrolean state government has taken an important step. For the first time, the decision is not to shoot the bear reflexively, but to take a measure that is technically sound and legally correct. This decision complies with the requirements of the European Court of Justice (C-601/22) and the management plans currently in force in Austria. This marks a path forward that prioritises prevention and regulation over lethal interventions. This is a bold signal for a matter-of-fact approach to dealing with large predators—and a clear indication of how conflicts with wild animals can be resolved in the future. Herd protection as a basis: The most important and oldest form of deterrent remains herd protection. Fences, herding, and livestock guardian dogs can effectively prevent attacks.
