Popis
**AIDS Memory UK** (registered charity number 1204941) is a nonprofit organisation established to commemorate individuals who died during the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the United Kingdom. Founded in 2016, its primary objective involves creating London's first permanent HIV/AIDS memorial to honour victims, support grieving communities, and highlight the virus's impact on disproportionately affected groups, including LGBTQ+ communities, Black African communities, people with bleeding disorders, and injecting drug users.

## Activities
The charity focuses on fostering inclusive dialogue through consultations with affected communities, forming the Affected Communities Advisory Board (ACAB). It revived London’s annual AIDS Vigil on World AIDS Day 2018 as a platform for shared remembrance and feedback about the memorial’s design. Collaborations include partnerships with major HIV charities, artists, and public figures.

## Memorial project
In 2024, five artists were shortlisted to design the memorial, planned for installation near the former Middlesex Hospital site by 2026. This location holds historical significance as the site of the UK’s first dedicated AIDS ward, opened by Diana, Princess of Wales, in 1987. The project received a £130,000 grant from London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who emphasised the memorial’s role in combating stigma and preserving the epidemic’s legacy.

## Public engagement
AIDS Memory UK organises panel discussions, art events, and media campaigns to amplify survivor testimonies and advocate for awareness. Its initiatives aim to reconcile historical trauma while promoting ongoing efforts to address HIV-related discrimination and health inequalities.
